Great Big Green Week outcomes in Calderdale

This week we have been taking part in a nationwide campaign, the Great Big Green Week, which runs from 18-26 September, to draw attention to climate change, whilst also making a connection with issues in communities around the borough.

As part of the week, on Monday 20 September, our teams demonstrated the vast amount of waste collected by Council workers in a normal weekend in Calderdale – see the images below!  All the waste collected was deposited in one area to be photographed and weighed with the costings of disposing calculated – demonstrating the cost of littering.

There was 6.1 tonnes of waste collected. The majority was plastic bottles, cans and paper cups that could have been recycled if people had taken their rubbish home.

Not only is this a cost in cash, but a huge cost to the environment – think of all that fuel used to transport the rubbish and to dispose of it safely.

A massive thanks to all involved in this project.
