Volunteers Needed for Winter Homeless Shelter

The Gathering Place winter homeless shelter runs from Jan – Mar. If you are interested in volunteering as a Befriender, Evening Team Leader, Morning Support, Evening or Morning Cook, Kitchen Assistant or as an Overnight Volunteer, please get in touch.

Training for those wishing to help at the winter homeless shelter is now ongoing. If you want to volunteer, please contact The Gathering Place (details below) as soon as possible for information.

Donate and Volunteer at the Food and Support Drop-in

While they need everything on the list below, the Food and Support Drop-In are currently very short of tins of every kind, cereals, instant noodles, cakes, biscuits, and fillings to put into sandwiches. Sandwich fillings and instant meals such as noodles are vital for people who may have a kettle but no cooker or microwave.

Tinned meat, corned beef, ham etc, rice, toilet rolls, pies, e.g. Fray Bentos, breakfast cereals, roll on deodorant, tinned soup/Cup a Soup, curry sauce/pasta sauce, soap, tinned meals – Irish stew etc., shampoo, tinned fish, tinned puddings, shower gel, tinned potatoes, toothpaste, tinned vegetables (peas/carrots/sweetcorn etc), coffee, washing up liquid, tinned baked beans, sugar, washing powder, instant mash potato, fruit squashes, instant noodles/Pot Noodles etc., biscuits/crackers, complete dog food, meat pastes, peanut butter & other savoury sandwich spreads, sweets (individually wrapped if possible), complete cat food, jam/marmalade/lemon curd/chocolate spread etc., UHT milk, tin openers, small bars of chocolate or other individual treats, instant hot chocolate, bakery and fresh items for use in the free cafe.

They are also short of shoes, socks and trainers, bath towels and double size bedding including; double sheets, double quilts, quilt covers, and pillows.

The Drop-In is open for deliveries on Thursday and Saturday Mornings between 8.30am and 12 noon. They also need volunteers on these days – regularly or occasionally – and they also need people to help clean up after the doors close at 11.45am on Saturdays.

Donate and help the most vulnerable this winter

Are you clearing out the old before bringing in the new this Christmas?

If so then why not consider donating your unwanted items to the One Good Turn charity at one of their Give and Take sessions being held across Calderdale throughout November and December. – The most urgent items required include:

  • Men’s clothes, shoes, coats – Ladies coats, shoes
  • Children coats, pyjamas, dressing gowns, slippers, shoes – Toys, Games, Books
  • Bedding, duvets, duvet covers, sheets, blankets for single and double beds and cots
  • Toiletries, Toothpaste, Soap, Deodorant, Sanitary Towels, Nappies, Shower gel

Donations can be made on the following collection dates:

  • Tuesday 17 November – St Augustine’s Centre, Hanson Lane – 1pm to 3pm
  • Tuesday 24 November – The Gathering Place, St James Road – 11.45am to 2pm
  • Tuesday 1 December – Mixenden Parents Resource Centre,  – 10am to 2pm
  • Tuesday 8 December – Waring Green Community Centre, Brighouse – 1pm to 3pm
  • Tuesday 15 December – The Gathering Place – St James Road – 11.45am to 2pm
  • Tuesday 15 December – St Augustine’s Centre, Hanson Lane – 2.30pm to 4.30pm
