Recycling Team Visit St. Michael and All Angels Junior Wardens

20170116_135411Calderdale Council’s’ Recycling Team Adviser, Chris Crossley, visited St. Michael and All Angels CE Primary School Junior Wardens on Monday 16 January to explain the importance of recycling and the negative effect it can have on our environment and wildlife if we fail to do so.

In the session organised by Heather Stout, Ovenden Initiative, Chris showed the junior wardens the kind of things they can recycle. There was a good discussion about recycling other things from home and how a lot of containers can be reused around the house.

She also explained that all councils now have targets to meet and that Calderdale no longer sends any rubbish to go to landfill.

The session included a brief history lesson on how some of our ideas for how we recycle today came about during World War 2. Chris also showed the Junior Wardens some examples of items that are made from recycled waste.

Most of the Junior Wardens said that their households recycle, and those that don’t promised to ask their mums and dads to make more of an effort. They were also asked to think about what they threw away when they were in school or playing out.

Safer Roads Policing Team visit St Michael and All Angels Junior Wardens

IMG_AS1Heather Stout, from the Ovenden and Mixenden Initiative, arranged for officers from West Yorkshire Police to visit Junior Wardens at St Michael and All Angels CE Primary School.

Local Northowram and Shelf PC, Shawn Hartley, was accompanied by PC Cox from the Safer Roads Policing Team.

PC Cox started by telling the junior wardens some of the issues he comes across whilst doing his job. This can speeding motorists, road traffic accidents, following known criminals or even farm animals!

PC Cox explained that because Calderdale is classed as a rural area, animals such as horses and sheep can cause problems on our roads.

IMG_AS4PC Cox and PC Hartley then took the Junior Wardens outside to look at the patrol car the Safer Roads Policing Team use. PC Cox explained that because he might have to travel long distances across West Yorkshire, and he sometimes has to drive fast, his car is a BMW, as opposed to the cars the everyday police officers have.

PC Cox let the junior wardens sit in the car and he explained some of the equipment he has on board. As well as satellite navigation equipment, he also has multiple radio antennas, as he is picking up information from all over West Yorkshire and not just Calderdale.

After a good look around the car, the junior wardens headed back into school to look at some of the other equipment the police carry.

Both PC’s showed the Junior Wardens, their radios, batons, pepper spray  and lastly their handcuffs and after the session the Junior Wardens thanked the officers for a very enjoyable and interesting session!

Community Warden visits St Michael and All Angels

CMBC Community Warden, Ced Oakley, and Heather Stout from the Ovenden Initiative, visited St. Michael and All Angels school to give a talk on the work that Community Wardens do on a daily basis.

Ced gave details of what being the eyes and ears of the community involves, including some of the issues he faces such as having to report areas on dog fouling, littering, fly tipping as well as other problems such as uneven paths, fire hazards and anti-social behaviour.

As well as all the above he told the Junior Wardens how he often helps Ward Link Workers with tasks such as door to door walkabouts to ask residents what they think of the area they live in, giving the community a chance to raise any concerns.

Ced also explained how he has the right to hand out fines for littering and dog fouling should such a situation arise.

The junior Wardens took a keen interest in the session and asked some great questions throughout; particularly upon learning that Ced also gets to work with the police and other service providers whenever they may need help.

Fire safety treat for St Michael & All Angels Junior Warden’s

Karina Gonzalez, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service District Prevention Assistant, visited the St. Michael and All Angels Junior Wardens in the afternoon of Monday 25 January to give a presentation on the role of fire fighters and how it might affect them and their families.

To start the session arranged by Ward Link Worker Heather Stout (Halifax North & East Team), Karina began her talk by showing the Junior Warden’s some of the various jobs that fire fighters do, giving examples of how they carry out these jobs before testing the Warden’s knowledge on how many different emergency services there are within the United Kingdom.

Some of the Warden’s guessed correctly answering that there are in fact 6 emergency services within the UK and they also managed to name 5 straight away before racking their brains and eventually naming the 6th service which is Cave Rescue.

Speaking about smoke alarms, the junior wardens were asked if they all had them at home to which the answer was a unanimous yes! Karina stressed that it is really important to test your smoke alarms at home regularly to make sure they are in working order before the Junior Wardens were shown a video of some of the jobs that fire fighters carry out on a day to day basis.

Karina then went onto talk about what you should and shouldn’t do when driving a car, including the dangers of talking on a mobile phone.

To end the session, the Junior Wardens took part in a short test to see what they had remembered from the talk and since the majority answered all the questions correctly, it’s safe to say that Karina’s visit was a huge success which had the young Junior Warden’s attention throughout.
