Calderdale Becomes a Sustainable Food City

The Calderdale Food Network has achieved membership of the Sustainable Food Cities Network, supporting their efforts to make local, healthy and sustainable food available to everyone. Calderdale has now become the 52nd member of Sustainable Food Cities – a network of cross-sector partnerships in towns, cities, boroughs and counties across the country that aim to make good food the easy choice for everyone. Calderdale will benefit from sharing good practice with places across the UK from Brighton to Aberdeen.

The Calderdale Food Network was established in July 2017 following a Calderdale Food Workshop in June 2017. The vision of Calderdale Food Network is: Calderdale is a good food borough where everyone, today and in the future, has equitable access to good food. The Calderdale Food Network is inclusive and open to all. Members are drawn from public, private and third sector organisations that have an interest in creating a sustainable and equitable food system.
The Calderdale Food Network is developing an action plan to identify projects it will take forward in 2018.

There are many active organisations delivering great work to promote healthy and sustainable food in Calderdale. Examples include:

  • Food for Life Calderdale: This programme is a place-based whole system approach to good food, working with schools, nurseries, the hospital, care settings and on the high street. The programme is funded by Calderdale Council and Calderdale CCG.
  • Food Systems Academy: This is an online open education resource to transform our food system, curated by Geoff Tansey.
  • Great Rock Co-op Owned and run by its suppliers and customers, open every Saturday, GRC is dedicated to providing great locally produced food to the community around Blackshawhead and the Upper Calder Valley. The produce includes meat, baked goods, eggs, cheese, vegetables, wine, beer, and a range of craft products – all reared, grown or made nearby. There is often a chance to meet the producers themselves, who play an active part in running the shop, and to find out more about how they work.
  • Holy Trinity Primary School, A Church of England Academy has been working with Food for Life for at least years and feel that children need to be fit and healthy for life. We are a Food for Life Gold School and actively promote healthy eating across school, from our in-house school meals to healthy packed lunches, from our fruit trolley to our water only policy. We grow our own food that is used in our school lunches and all children cook in our new children’s cooking kitchen. See our twitter account @HTPShalifax.
  • Incredible Edible Todmorden is about spreading kindness through volunteers planting and growing food in public spaces all over our small Pennine market town for everybody and anybody to help themselves to. We aim to build community cohesiveness by involving all comers, bringing in visitors and supporting local businesses.
  • Love Bread: LoveBread CIC is a community supported bakery and social enterprise. It is a wholesale Real Bread bakery with a workshop kitchen. They run classes for individuals, schools and community groups, and can organise corporate events and host private parties.
  • The Outback Community Kitchen and Garden – A Halifax Opportunities Trust project based in Park Ward, Central Halifax. The garden grows seasonal fruit and vegetables which are available at affordable prices to the local community. The kitchen is used to provide training and workshops around food education, cooking, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. The facilities are also available for other local organisations to hire. Calderdale Good Food Workshop

There is a growing network of people and organisations supporting good food across Calderdale.

We would like to invite you to be part of a strategic workshop on Friday 23 June at The Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, Halifax 10.15am-3.15pm which will bring together this network and wider local partners to lead the development of Calderdale’s borough-wide strategic approach to good food for everyone.

The workshop is part of borough-wide activity to support positive food culture across Calderdale and aims to engage and empower people and organisations to work in partnership to take forward solutions to the challenges we face with regard to food. The workshop will support the growing network of people and organisations supporting good food culture and will lead to actions that can be taken forward through working together.

We are delighted to be working with Food Matters (one of the three Sustainable Food Cities partner organisations) in the facilitation of the workshop. The workshop will include inspiring presentations from food partnerships from other parts of the UK and will focus on the 6 key themes which form the basis of the Sustainable Food Cities Award framework:

  • Promoting healthy and sustainable food to the public
  • Tackling food poverty, diet-related ill health and access to affordable healthy food
  • Building community food knowledge, skills, resources and projects
  • Promoting a vibrant and diverse sustainable food economy
  • Transforming catering and food procurement
  • Reducing waste and the ecological footprint of the food system
