Let’s not make this the Most Wasteful Time of the Year

As the festive season is well underway, we would like to urge you to be mindful of waste and consider the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. And maybe Rudolph 🙂

As we are all in the Christmas season rush to get everything ready for the big day, it is more important than ever to be mindful of the waste this spree is producing.

There will be cards, wrapping paper, packaging made of plastic or cardboard. Most of this can be recycled. In fact most of the day to day household waste is recyclable.

Calderdale Council runs weekly collections of household waste that can be recycled where you can dispose of glass, plastic, metal and card or paper as well as several other items such as fabrics, small electricals and food waste.

Your local Household Waste Recycling Centre can take bulkier items.
Calderdale Council’s bulky waste recycling is still a little backed up, bear with us.

For more information about recycling and other handy tips visit http://www.calderdale.gov.uk/environment/waste/recycling.

Even the Christmas Tree can be recycled. Overgate run a Treecycling programme that for a small donation of ÂŁ10 will collect your tree at the end of the season.

This service covers certain Halifax Postcodes so check with Overgate. The page has other recycling options for you to choose from.

For more information on the Overgate Treecycling Campaign please contact the Fundraising Team on 01422 387121 or email fundraising@overgatehospice.nhs.uk

The office of national statistics has concluded that 3 out of 4 adults in the UK are concerned about climate change and they are more likely to change their habits in order to take action. Recycling is one of the easiest actions that can be taken to reduce our negative impact on the Planet.

So let’s all do our bit and keep green, before and after Christmas!

A Halloween Event with a Difference – Waste Not, Want Not 30th October 2021

This Halloween, NHP staff, in collaboration with the Ovenden Ward councillors, Todmorden Climate College and All 1 Collective and Lab hosted a Halloween event with a difference! With COP26 getting underway on the same day, we held a spooky fun day all across Lee Mount to get people thinking about their environmental impact, involving the community in conversations around climate change and action, as well as providing simple ideas to tackle plastic waste in our homes.

In the main venue, Lee Mount Baptist Church, Paint Me Parties was there to paint faces and the Artworks artist provided a workshop making pencil holders out of recycled fabric and waste.

Dan nearly ran out of his piggy planters, made from recycled materials, and encouraging people to grow something of their own. Natalie was there talking about litter picking, demonstrating the Vintage litter Museum which contains all types of litter from the last century and letting people have a go at litter picking themselves – taking the collected litter to St. George’s House to win a prize! And also speaking to people about the green spaces in Lee Mount and asking for their ideas on how these can be better used to the benefit of the community.

Peter and the Pavilion group were there to promote the Pavilion project and gather more signatures for the petition. Hilary from All 1 Collective was there talking to people about Doughnut Economics and Calderdale green New Deal ran an environmental quiz and highlighting the work they are doing to bring about a green jobs revolution. We also had the recycling team from Calderdale Council handing out recycling containers for those that need them as well as advice on recycling. Andrew from Noah’s Arc was on hand to talk to people about their service and ways they can help save money on bills.

Last but not least, Danielle Durrans, the ward councillor, welcomed people to the event and handed out goodie bags with free samples of things we can use to reduce out plastic consumption – bar shampoo and conditioner, bamboo toothbrushes, cellulose sponges and sisal soap bags with soap that can replace shower gel bottles, plastic body puffs and plastic sponges. Finally, people were encouraged to pledge one change and we had some brilliant ideas that demonstrated people had really taken the message to heart.

Over at St. George’s House, Lisa and her team opened up the St. George’s charity shop, spoke to people about what they’d like to see happening in Shroggs Park with Friends of Shroggs Park and provided homemade cake and refreshments. We also had Libbi from NHP help man the smoothie bike using fresh fruit provided for free from Morrison’s.

Up at Shroggs Park, Leah of Positive Impact Sports hosted a Recycling Olympics assault course that aimed to test people’s knowledge on recycling.

The event was very well attended with over 100 people of all ages turning up, some having travelled from other areas of Halifax. It felt like a hugely successful day with lots of people having fun, learning something new and introducing an element of collaboration between local services and people on this crucial issue. There was always a nervousness that such an event might not be appreciated and we worked hard to make sure we were not preaching but allowing space for curiosity, solution finding and collaboration. This felt like a truly community effort!

As a result, we feel confident that despite so far being left out of these conversations, our communities are ready and willing to think about their part in the solutions, make changes however small, and above all, recognise that now is the time to work together to tackle climate change. Our group are now planning further events with an environmental theme so please watch out for those next year. And if you have an idea or would like to be involved, please get in touch as we’d love to hear them!

The Great British Spring Clean – North East Halifax Needs You!

The Great British Spring Clean is on its way from Friday 20th March to Monday 13th April 2020 across the UK. Calderdale Council and Keep Britain Tidy are calling on you, our #LitterHeroes, to take action.

This year Calderdale Council want to support as many local groups and individuals as possible. We hope that collecting a record amount of litter will improve the environment on your doorstep by joining the country’s biggest mass-participation environmental campaign.

We couldn’t do The Great British Spring Clean without people like you committing to taking part – you are helping to make a real difference in your local community by getting people to think about the amount of litter in our environment. Once someone has been on a litter pick, it’s very hard for them to not notice litter everywhere they go; we want litter picking to be the norm!

The Great British Spring Clean is aiming to inspire over half a million people to join forces across the country to collect and safely dispose of litter from our streets, parks and beaches, recycling as much as possible.

It doesn’t matter if this is your first time hosting a litter pick or your one hundredth, we want #LitterHeroes across the country to stand together to declare that litter is unacceptable.

If you would like to host or attend a Clean-Up then please get in touch and Calderdale can provide Equipment, Bags (from Keep Britain Tidy) and collect all litter after the event.

Clean-ups will take place from 20 March – 13 April 2020 and we already have some events in the diary so please get in touch ASAP to get booked in.

Recycling team talk at St Michael and All Angels School

20160425_133800Calderdale Council’s’ Recycling Team Adviser, Yvonne Hagan, visited St. Michael and All Angels CE Primary School Junior Wardens on Monday 25 April to explain the importance of recycling and the effect it can have on our environment if we fail to do so.

She explained that all councils now have targets to meet and that hardly any rubbish goes to landfill to be buried, adding that a carrier bag alone can take upto 500 years to disintegrate.

20160425_133814Most of the Junior Wardens said that their households recycle and they were asked to think about what they threw away when they were in school or playing out before Yvonne showed examples of some of the things that can be recycled and what the items can be turned into.

Calderdale crackdown on fly-tipping

flytippingFly-tippers in Calderdale could face tougher penalties when the Council introduces its new powers to stop, search and seize vehicles suspected of waste crime.

New legislation from Monday 6 April 2015 will make it easier for enforcement officers across the country to crack down on fly-tipping… read the full story here…

Calderdale Council continues to take action to prevent fly-tipping. For example, fences are put up on Council-owned land to deter fly-tippers; and inspections are carried out at suspect premises to check waste disposal arrangements. The Council provides sufficient facilities so that residents can dispose of their waste correctly.

You can ask to have bulky household waste collected at www.calderdale.gov.uk by email to customer.first@calderdale.gov.uk or by calling 01422 288002.

To report fly-tipping, please complete the online form here or contact the Council confidentially on 01422 288001.
