Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2015: Lifetime Achievement Award – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Lifetime Achievement Award

WINNER: Denise Keenan (St Augustine’s)

Our deserving winner has given outstanding voluntary service to the communities in Park and Warley wards for many years. “She is the very backbone of St Augustine’s Community Centre.”

Denise has been involved in voluntary work for over 30 years providing much needed support to the multi-cultural communities in the Park Ward area.

She has been the backbone to the success of the St Augustine’s centre on Hanson Lane, which has thrived on a shoestring budget but still provides help, advice and support to the vulnerable.

Providing the basic needs and hope to to those at risk with the help from Denise, St Augustine’s has helped to build their confidence, encouraging participation in the wider community and preventing isolation.

Denise has a lot of time for everybody and never fails to go out of her way to offer support to those who need it.

Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2015: Community Involvement Award – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Community Involvement Award

WINNER: Sharon Tyler

Our winner is a local mum who in her spare time works tirelessly to organise activities for young people in Pellon. That’s when she’s not planting fruit trees in Warley or planning various community events!

Sharon is local mum from the Pellon area who also works full time in Kirklees and during her spare time in an evening and at weekends she works tirelessly as a group leader with the Sharx youth group based at the Christ Church in Pellon.

The Sharx group is made up of 35 plus young people who meet regularly in the church to take part in organised youth activities and Sharon works with the group on a range of projects out in the community.

These projects have involved the young people cleaning up the Christ Church cemetery and planting fruit trees in the Warley village area which not only benefit the local communities in the Warley ward but also allow the young people to learn new skills.

Sharon also organises fund raising activities where the youth group raise funds for their own group and other charitable causes and also supports other Church groups such as the International group (asylum seekers), lunch club, scouts and girl guides.

As well as the above, Sharon also contributes to other activities/events in the Warley ward including the very popular West View Park family fun day.

Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2015: Young Person of the Year – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Young Person of the Year

WINNER: Harvey Morgan

Our winner is an inspirational young person who has achieved great personal success. His sheer determination and perseverance to overcome personal challenges has encouraged others to turn up and take part.

Harvey is a truly inspirational young man who has overcome a number of personal challenges since joining the Boys Brigade at just 5 years old.

Harvey has serious Dyspraxia which causes difficulty in activities which require coordination and movement and yet, now aged 18 he has earned all the awards the Boys Brigade has to offer and most recently completed his Queens Badge which is the highest award available.

At first Harvey slightly struggled when it came to competitions but he persevered and tackled all the badge work and initially when it came to competitions the other boys would rally around to help him but as time progressed it was Harvey who became the driving force encouraging boys to turn up and take part.

Harvey is a truly inspirational young man and true to form, he continues to strive towards success and is now working on getting his D of E Gold award.

Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2015: Outstanding Individual Award – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Outstanding Individual Award

WINNER: Nageena Haroon

This year’s winner is a person who speaks her mind and is not afraid to address difficult or controversial issues. She is an active campaigner who seeks to reach out and better relationships between all communities in the area.

Nageena has been involved with local coordinating group, Park Ward Stakeholders since the EDL national demonstration. Prior to this she was a volunteer with Healthy Towns helping children and young people learn to cook healthy food.

Nageena is now involved as a volunteer in a women’s group which aims to address child sexual exploitation and she has also been an active and vocal campaigner to raise awareness of this issue in Park ward – not easy and not without controversy, she always speaks her mind and is not afraid to challenge the status quo.

She works with lots of different organisations and agencies including the Police to help them get a better understanding of the local community and build better relationships and she is a massive advocate of all things that reach across communities, bringing together eastern European and Asian, as well as championing bringing white and Asian women together to address child sexual exploitation.

Nageena was also an active member of the Halifax Academy Parents group and has always worked hard in the community to address difficult and controversial issues – currently she is involved in a group looking at on line grooming, and stopping girls going to Syria.

Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2015: Contribution to the Older Generation – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Contribution to the Older Generation

WINNER: Wednesday Lunchbox

This group has been providing lunches for older people in Pellon for more than 20 years. “It’s more than just a nutritious meal; it’s a chance to get together and socialise.

The Wednesday lunchbox operate a lunch club on the last Wednesday of every month from the Christ Church, Church Lane Pellon, Halifax.

This group help to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people by providing a nutritional meal for 30 people from the Pellon area are taken to and from the lunch club by volunteer car drivers.

At Christmas time up to 60 people attend the lunch club where entertainment is also organised and lunches are prepared and cooked in the church by 6 hardworking volunteers

The lunch club has been around and operated for over 20 years and it is an essential group in the Pellon area in that it provides an important social opportunity for isolated and lonely older people to come together and enjoy other peoples company.
