One step closer for Illingworth Gaol plans

The North Halifax Historic Buildings Preservation Trust is delighted to learn that its request for an Asset Transfer of the Illingworth Gaol and Stocks has been approved by the Cabinet of Calderdale Council at their meeting on Monday 15 December 2014.

This will allow the Trustees to proceed with their plans to apply for grants in order to reinstate the building and stocks to their original condition.

GaolThere are 108 village Lock up’s included on the National Heritage list for England and of those only five, including Illingworth Gaol, are Grade II* listed. This sets Illingworth Gaol in its national context in a very elite group and is the only one in the North of England.

It is the intention of the Trust to create an Educational Heritage Centre which will allow visits from educational establishments to study and learn about “Crime and Punishment” in Victorian times as well as learning about the Co-operative movement in the nineteenth century and what impact it made on peoples lives.Visits by groups and members of the public are to be encouraged as this is a local Heritage site which should be preserved and maintained, not only for the residents of North Halifax, but also for everyone in Calderdale and beyond.

The group has been extremely pleased with the tremendous support from many local residents and organisations who have given their continued support towards the creation of an Educational Heritage Centre.

The Trustees believe it is important that all historic buildings such as this should be preserved and maintained for future generations. It is our duty as temporary, custodial guardians to ensure our local heritage is readily available and preserved as living history for our children and grandchildren.
