Dean Field Junior Wardens meet the Community Organisers

Junior Wardens from Dean Field Community Primary School took part in a session provided by Community Organisers, Natalie and Jaime.

The session focused on what matters to the Junior Wardens within their neighbourhood, what they love about where they live, what their dream neighbourhood looks like and how they would change it if they had an unlimited amount of money.

The junior wardens were keen participants in the session and came up with some fantastic  ideas, suggestions and thoughts.

A common theme with some of the things the junior wardens don’t like appeared to have an environmentally friendly feel to it, such as the amount of litter and plastics on the streets as well as too many cars on the road.

It was established that should they have an unlimited amount of money we would see things such as all pets/animals in need being rescued, cars not creating any atmospheric gases among lots of other creative ideas.

Overall the session was enjoyed by the Junior Wardens from Dean Field

Road Safety Partnership tackles parking at Lee Mount School

On Wednesday 23 October 2019, partners from the Calderdale Road Safety Partnership attended Lee Mount Primary School after it was highlighted that parking outside the school was an ongoing issue and has been for some time.

The event was organised by Dan Marham, Ward Link Worker for the Ovenden Initiative following a meeting with Lee Mount Primary School headteacher Emme Ford and was supported by partners from West Yorkshire Police, CMBC Community Wardens and Calderdale Community Safety Wardens who were joined by students George and Jack.

The morning proved to be a success as the zigzag markings were kept clear enabling pupils to safely cross the road on their way into school in the morning. Small posters were fixed onto the school railings to highlight the dangers of parking outside schools and a larger banner was given to the school by the Community Safety Team which is now also on display on the railings.

Work will continue in the future as the Road Safety Partnership work on ways in which  issues such as school parking can be proactively dealt with and there is a full week of action planned from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd November 2019 at schools throughout Calderdale.

Not Long Now for Le Tour de Yorkshire 2018

Millions of spectators will line the route for the four-day men’s race and two-day women’s race which run between Thursday 3 May – Sunday 6 May.

The full schedule and race timings can be viewed online now at letour.yorkshire.com/timings

Over 2.2 million people stood roadside last year to cheer on these two wheeled titans. Yorkshire knows how to support a bike race and Welcome to Yorkshire as an organisation strongly promotes these events. This kind of support just isn’t seen in most races in the cycling calendar. Secondly, the terrain. Yorkshire is as beautiful as it is brutal and the riders know that taking part in the Tour de Yorkshire will be rough and rewarding in equal measure.

Cyclists want a challenge and Yorkshire provides that in abundance. As Aqua Blue Sport rider Matt Brammeier summed up quite perfectly; “Without pain and suffering we would be nothing and life would get pretty boring. [The Tour de Yorkshire] provided a fair share for me this weekend but I bloody loved every minute.

For the women taking part in the two-day Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race, there are other aspects of huge significance. Most important of all is the parity that the race brings. The race takes place on the same roads that the men tackle. The race has one of the largest prize pots in women’s cycling and it gets the same, full television coverage that the men’s race does – exposure that is crucial for riders, teams and sponsors alike.

The 2017 event was particularly enthralling viewing as a world class field including Olympic Road Race champion, Anna van der Breggen, lit up the roads from Tadcaster, through the Yorkshire Dales. The finishing podium was made up of a two-time World Champion, Giorgia Bronzini and American pocket rocket Coryn Rivera. However, the top spot was reserved for someone much closer to home. The Yorkshire flags in Harrogate were waved all that bit more vigorously than usual as the county’s very own hero, Lizzie Deignan, spectacularly sprung a solo attack with 15km to go and powered her way to victory.

“The finish was so special and so surreal and it meant so much to me to receive such great support,” Deignan said afterwards. “It was incredible and I’m struggling to get my head around it. This is up there with the biggest wins of my career, definitely.”

This year sees both races move into new ground; as the Asda Women’s race doubles in length to become a two-day race and the men’s race also gains an extra day, taking it from three to four.

From a racing perspective, this is exciting as it gives both races more time to develop and it presents the stage planners with more chances to create truly spectacular stages.

From a fans perspective, it gives more people more opportunities to see their cycling heroes and allows for more of Yorkshire’s remarkable scenery and brutal climbs to be showcased too. On top of this, 50 per cent of the host towns for this year are first time hosts, with Barnsley, Halifax, Ilkley and Richmond joining Beverley, Doncaster, Leeds and Scarborough in welcoming this year’s race.

Ash Green pupils meet West Yorkshire Fire Service

Heather Stout from the Mixenden Initiative and pupils from Ash Green Community Primary School, received a visit in school from Blue Watch, from Illingworth Fire Station on Friday 3rd March.

Fire fighters, Barney, Adam, Andy and Fraser, came to meet the lads for the first time, after the boys decided they wanted Blue Watch to be their chosen watch.

It just so happened it was World Book Day in school on the day of their visit, so the boys took Blue Watch by surprise when they were met by Where’s Wally, Batman, The Joker, Al Capone, Iron Man, a footballer, a Ninja Turtle, a pirate and a knight in shining armour!

After asking lots of questions of the fire fighters, Blue Watch invited the boys to visit Illingworth Fire Station on Friday 10th March to have a look around.

The boys were shown around the upstairs of the fire station, where the firemen train and relax whilst waiting to go on a ‘shout’. Watch Commander Andy explained that even if they are asleep, they only have a couple of minutes from getting the call to getting in the fire engine, with all their equipment on, and leaving to attend the call out.

When the group went back downstairs, the boys were shown the room where the fireman’s pole is and where they keep their protective clothing and boots that they wear when attending a fire.

Mrs Bowers and Mr Munday from Ash Green decided to hold a competition to see who could get the firefighters protective clothing on first. They were both very quick but Mr Munday just pipped Mrs Bowers and was the winner!

The group then went outside to the car park where the boys were shown the crashed cars that the fire fighters use to practise having to cut people out of cars. They also showed them some of the equipment they carry on the fire engine. The firemen then got the hoses out and let the boys have a go with them.

The boys really enjoyed the afternoon and ended their visit by thanking Blue Watch for a fantastic tour of Illingworth fire station.

New facilities for local schoolchildren

Calderdale Council is investing £8.6 million to rebuild Copley Primary School and Moorside Community Primary School in Ovenden, to provide an even better learning experience for local young people.

The Council’s Cabinet approved the funding and identified these two schools as a priority for investment.

Local people will soon be able to see the exciting designs for both new schools and details of a drop-in session to see the plans for Moorside School will be confirmed soon.

People will be able to give feedback on the plans for both Copley and Moorside schools via the planning process in the coming weeks.
