Love Your Local Markets Fortnight

Where shopping comes to life… at your local markets.

Calderdale is a place where there is a real buzz in the air. People talking, shopping, meeting friends and buying from local people they trust.

Calderdale markets are not like typical supermarkets where you get what you need and go, they are bursting at the seams with energy and friendliness. The traders are always looking out for new products to bring to our markets and many cook, bake and sew themselves, so you know you’re getting local quality at great prices.

From Friday 17 to Friday 31 May, markets across the world will be getting involved with the National Association of British Market Authorities’ (NABMA) Love Your Local Market campaign.

Now in its eighth year, the campaign celebrates markets being at the heart of local communities, with the theme ‘Markets – Close to your heart’.

Throughout the fortnight there will be an artist in residence at Halifax Borough Market, in association with Halifax Business Improvement District (BID) and Artworks, Halifax. Visitors will be able to see illustrator Louis Benoit at work, producing sketches and drawings inspired by the unique sights, sounds and atmosphere of the magnificent Victorian market. Shoppers are encouraged to come and watch, ask questions and chat.

Louis’ residency will be followed by a second artist and a poet, with the resulting pieces forming part of an exhibition in the summer.

Also at Halifax Borough Market will be a Record Fair on Saturday 25 May in the Albany Arcade and on Thursday 30 May the Arcade also hosts a Food Mixer Market, celebrating great local food and including a pop up from Halifax-based Darkland Brewery.

Todmorden will be hosting a ‘Foodie Fryday’ event on Friday 31 May, 9:00am-7:00pm, which will be a feast for the senses with a great selection of delicious food on offer, including fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, fine cheeses, jams and preserves, freshly made pizza,  vegan treats, Indian street food, sweet treats and much more.

There’ll also be special offers and tastings at other Calderdale Markets, including Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, Brighouse and Elland.

Calderdale Council’s Markets Manager, John Walker, said:
“Love Your Local Market fortnight is always a special time at Calderdale markets. It’s a great time to visit, as in addition to the existing great stalls, there are lots of special events showcasing our wonderful markets.
“If you’re a young entrepreneur it’s also the perfect time to test out your ideas, with free stalls for young traders at our Open Markets.
“There are also lots of other incentives available, including free weeks and ‘trade for a fiver’ options. Get in touch to find out more!”
