North Halifax Star 2014: Lifetime Achievement – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

WINNER: Irene Mulhall

Organiser, community activist, Local historian, Trustee, Committee Member, Webmaster, mother, grandmother… the list goes on… and it’s getting longer!

Irene is a retired lady who has given and continues to give an awful lot to her community.

“She is never just sitting – I think she is always planning in her head what needs to be done!”

“She has been involved in a whole load of organisations over many years. And when I say “involved” I mean she has thrown her heart and soul into it!”

A member of the Illingworth Methodist Church, Irene has supported the church for over 40 years. She sits as a member of the ‘Messenger Trust’ to ensure the church magazine is published and distributed to the local community.

She’s also organised free courses for the local community including ICT and First Aid.

“Whenever there is a local issue that is of concern to people, Irene is usually to be found, organising a team of people to do something about it”

Irene was the driving force behind setting up the local over 50s group. The group was set up in 2011 and its aim is to offer older people in Illingworth and Bradshaw, a range of activities and classes to help promote their health and well-being.

As secretary of the group, Irene ensures everything runs smoothly, including managing the website, which she also created.

When I asked her how she had the time to do the LA Group, she just said, ““Somebody had to do it””. It was more than she expected I think but she would see it as her job to take on if no one else came forward”.

Irene is a real champion of Local Heritage. As a member of the Local History Group and has given talks on local people and buildings of historical importance.

She is involved with Mount Zion Chapel preservation group to help make the church into a heritage centre.

Irene is also a trustee and secretary for the North Halifax Historical Buildings Preservation Trust – which was set up to preserve the Illingworth Gaol and Stocks and working towards them becoming a community asset.

Irene has worked tirelessly with her fellow trustees to formulate a business plan to try and save the Gaol. This work is ongoing; it’s a very exciting project for North Halifax.

Irene Mulhall is the embodiment of community spirit.  In the Milky Way of Calderdale, she is the North Halifax Star!
