The wire industry in Calderdale (from cradle to the grave) and Great uncle Percy – Inventor of the cat’s eye are just two of the illustrated talks taking place at Calderdale Industrial Museum over the coming weeks.

Glenda Shaw is back by popular demand to give a talk on The man, the business, the legend! Great uncle Percy – Inventor of  Cats eyes – Wednesday 3rd July 2019 at 7.30pm.

Shared Histories at Bankfield Museum – Starts this weekend

A selection of artworks by Eva Mileusnic focusing on the global movement of people, along with ideas relating to how we mark out and define cultural and national identities.

Saturday 12 November to Saturday 7 January
At Bankfield Museum, Akroyd Park, Boothtown Rd, HX3 6HG

Through a selection of found objects and original mixed media works, Eva Mileusnic explores themes relating to identity, integration and belonging. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally since graduating from Bradford College and Huddersfield University.

Explore the dark side of Halifax – Heritage walk

A revised walk recalling the severed heads, ghosts, creaking gibbets, strange burials and other peculiarities – like the guilty pig – historically associated with places visited in the town centre.

Sunday 25 October – From 2.15pm
Meet by West Gate (top gate) of Halifax Piece Hall.

Admission costs £3

Heritage walks are generally two hours of fairly easy walking and are suitable for accompanied children over the age of thirteen. No need to book, just turn up and pay on the day. Churchyard may be slippery.

Illingworth Gaol & Stocks Open Days

GaolVisitors can see the double (two seater) stocks dated 1697 and the interior of the 1823 Illingworth Gaol and feel what it would have been like to have been imprisoned there.

  • Saturday 12 September 2015 – From 12pm to 4pm
  • Sunday 13 September 2015 – From 12pm to 4pm

There will also be information on how the Trust plans to restore the Gaol together with the adjacent early Co-operative store (1863) as well as some true stories of crimes committed and the prisoners that were held in the Gaol all those years ago.

Tours last approximately 20 mins with a maximum of 10 people per tour and this event is not suitable for children under the age of 5.
