Yorkshire Day – nah then, what’s going on?

Yorkshire_Day_BannerHalifax is set to roll out the red carpet on Monday 1 August as the chosen host of the 2016 Yorkshire Day Celebration so be sure to get involved and celebrate all that’s great about the UK’s biggest county with events, activities and fun for all the family.

A parade of 200 civic dignitaries made up of Lord Mayors, Mayors and other Civic Heads from across Yorkshire will be led by a traditional brass band as they parade through the streets of the Town Centre to visit Halifax Minster for a special themed public service before enjoying a Yorkshire Day lunch at The Shay.

Events will kick off at 10am outside Halifax Town Hall which will be flying the Yorkshire flag from dawn to dusk and between 10.30 and 11.30am the Siddal WI is holding a Yorkshire Tea Party at Halifax Central Library with cakes and bakes for sale to raise money for charity.

Local libraries are getting involved with the celebrations by hosting events such as:

  • Face painting for children at the Central Library – 1pm to 3pm,
  • Craft session at Brighouse Library – 2pm until 3pm
  • An afternoon of Yorkshire dialect at Elland Library – from 2pm

If you can’t wait until Monday then you may want to go along to Bankfield Museum on Saturday 30 July to hear a talk on The Costumes of Yorkshire, based on a book published in 1814 about the clothing of working people.

Elsewhere, Eureka continues its ‘44 Days of Summer’ and celebrates all things Yorkshire whilst Harveys of Halifax will run promotions on Yorkshire merchandise, offer a Yorkshire Menu in the restaurant and will have a Yorkshire Day window display.

There’s plenty more going on which can be found at www.visitcalderdale.com, so be sure to do Yorkshire and Halifax proud by getting out with all the family and celebrating all that’s great about the place we love to live!

Calderdale Local Plan Consultation

The Council is currently working to produce a Local Plan for Calderdale. This will set out a framework for how the District will grow over the next 15 years to meet the need for new homes and jobs. It will also identify sites for proposed development, and areas that will be protected.

The consultation starts at 12 noon on Friday 6 November and runs for 6 weeks until 5pm Friday 18 December. Residents and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to comment on potential sites, and other aspects of the Local Plan, and the Preliminary Draft Charging Schedule for CIL.

We are very keen to encourage residents and others involved in the community to view the information on the Council’s website and make their comments on line, using the following links to the Local Plan page on the Council’s website.
