DON’T PANIC! Calderdale at War, 1939-1945

Running from Saturday 8 June to 30 September 2019Bankfield Museum will be holding a FREE exhibition of photographs and memorabilia.

September 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Calderdale was directly affected: men and women were conscripted for military and industrial service; industry was placed on a war footing and many workers took on Civil Defence and Home Guard duties. The area did not escape unscathed, there were 11 bombing incidents recorded and 11 people were killed.

On 24 December 1944 a German V1 Flying Bomb (commonly known as ‘Doodlebugs’) landed in a field at Little Tooting Farm, Hubberton, Sowerby. Extensive blast damage made the farmhouse uninhabitable for some time and broke windows a mile away. The farmhouse occupants received cuts from broken glass.

The photograph shows the Auxiliary Fire Service team, which attended the incident, along with the police and ambulance service.

The Great Get Together

Still time to advertise your Great Get Together event this year! We have only got the Crow Wood Park Weekend and the Illingworth Methodist Church events advertised so far but I’m sure many of you will have events of which we are still unaware.

Obviously the street street parties for Harry and Meghan will be uppermost in your minds and we would be grateful to  advertise those also – anything to show #moreincommon, #bettertogether.
