Visitors go wild at Ogden Water

On Wednesday 31st July, North Halifax Partnership Staff Karen Scanlon, Dan Marham and CMBC Community Warden Lee Ackroyd joined The Countryside and Woodlands Team at Ogden Water for a wild Ogden day.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Dot Foster who welcomed everyone to a fun packed day where they would learn more about local wildlife.  Activities included Minibeast hunts, making an insect hotel, plus indoor crafts  making clay hedgehogs and fuzzy bees as well as educational talks on the importance of bees.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and spoke to visitors about moorland fires along with Moors for the Future who were there in the Bogtastic Van which tours towns and cities to inspire visitors about the iconic moorlands that surround them.

Our Communities Award 2017: Contribution to the Older Generation – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

WINNER: Maurice Kidney and the Halifax & District Irish Society

Maurice Kidney is the Membership Secretary of the Halifax Irish Luncheon Club.  He provides a great service to the Luncheon Club – recording each member’s unique membership number, address, telephone number, next of kin etc. in case of an emergency whilst attending the Luncheon Club.

Maurice greets everyone as they arrive giving each person a ticket telling of the day’s entertainment, the date of the next Luncheon Club and the entertainment for that date.  The ticket has a tear off slip and after entering their membership number this is put into a draw which if drawn during the Luncheon Club receives a £10 prize.

Maurice is the hub of the Luncheon Club as he greets every member on arrival and always has a little chat with each member on arrival.

The Halifax Luncheon Society provides an excellent social event twice a month (once a month in Summer and December) for the 50s and over.

There is a two course lunch, live music entertainment (different entertainment each time), bingo, raffle and domino card and everyone can attend whether they are Irish or not with  a small cover charge of £4.  The Committee is approx 18 people who work tirelessly to provide a fabulous afternoon 12 – 3pm.

Anyone with mobility problems is looked after and the atmosphere is first class.  There are usually up to 80 people attending each Luncheon Club and the majority dance when the live singer is on. Couples attend and many widows and widowers and the camaraderie is simply first class.
