NE Halifax Safer Cleaner Greener Partnership – Pellon Clean Up Event

From 10am – 1pm on Wednesday 16th November over 20 members of staff and volunteers carried out a clean-up of the Pellon estate in the Warley ward, there were 3 skips provided by the Together housing group positioned on Rye Lane, Ryecroft Terrace and Ashville gardens which were soon filled, Together housing also provided a cage van as did Calderdale council and Yorkshire housing to remove excess waste.

Through litter picking, staff and volunteers managed to clear away approx.; 80 bags of general litter from streets, grass verges, from around the schools and shops they also managed to engage with 50+ residents on the day to remind them of the free skips and residents surely took advantage of this!

Many thanks to the staff from Together Housing, North Halifax Partnership’s Neighbourhood Team, Calderdale Council, Yorkshire Housing, West Yorkshire Police and special thanks to the community volunteers who took part and helped made this a very successful event.

From residents spoken to all were very thankful and below are a few of their comments;

‘Thank you for today this has saved me a lot of money’

‘The area is looking very clean and tidy – hope  we can keep it that way’

‘those guys in the vans have been great really helpful’

‘Rye Lane looks cleaner than I have ever seen it. Well done everyone’

‘great to see so many people working hard for the benefit of our community’

‘Wowee, coming back thru the Ashville area tonight it was definitely a different country – there was no litter all over the streets, no junk dumped around, it was a lovely area with clean roads, clear grass verges with a variety of lovely trees – will do best to keep it that way and not let the litter louts ruin it’

‘really appreciate the hard work you are doing’

‘If the skips were put there maybe every other month I do think majority of residents would keep areas clean n tidy. A lot don’t have transport therefore can’t just nip to the tip like us who drive’

Volunteers resume works at Shroggs Park

With the help of local volunteers, the Friends of Shroggs Park Group have started to pick up where they left off pre-covid with a number of small scaled clean up and maintenance activities in the park which have taken place fortnightly.

Friends of Shroggs Park and community volunteers have been working in small groups over the last month alongside employees from CMBC Parks Department to carry out works in order to keep the park in a pleasant state for those who use it.

The first clean up effort resulted in a dozen bin liners of general litter being removed from the parks grounds with the whole park, including the woodland walk being covered on that occasion.

The following work that took place was focused on cutting back and neatening up the edges of the walkways in the vicinity of the maze which saw a fair amount of turf loaded into the back of a CMBC Vehicle.

The group would like to extend a thank you to CMBC for the support and providing the vehicles to remove the waste at the end of the clean ups.

These activities are currently ongoing with the next one taking place on Monday 24th August 2020 – 10am to 12noon, meeting by the Maze in the park.

If you would like to get involved in these efforts or require further information, contact Peter Robinson on 07599 524471 or by email to peterrobinson936@yahoo.co.uk. You can also email Dan Marham, Ward Link Worker for the North Halifax Partnership at Daniel.Marham@Calderdale.gov.uk if you would like to get involved.

Over 20 bags of litter removed from Wheatley Streets

On Saturday 14 September 2019, members of the Wheatley Neighbourhood Watch Group teamed up with partner services to take part in a clean-up in the area organised by Dan Marham, Ward Link Worker from the North Halifax Partnership.

With support from West Yorkshire Police PCSO’s Gordon Thorpe and James Hughes as well as CMBC Community Wardens Jonny Cato and Zameer Akhtar the group met for 1.45pm at The Flying Pig at Greystones.

The groups headed out at 2pm and split in two with one group heading down towards Long Lane and Hebble Lane whilst the other team headed up Wharfdale Mount before going down Ramsden Street and along Wheatley and Shroggs Roads.

The clean up quickly gained the attention of passing residents who were thankful for the work of those involved with most saying they would love to take part in future clean-up activities in the area.

Youngest member of the group George, aged 8 had an ongoing competition to see who could fill their bags the quickest to add an element of fun to the event.

Resident Gerda Norminton who helped with the clean up commended the team effort and said;

“It was great to walk home without looking at rubbish everywhere. A good day and exercise for all of us” and finished by urging more people to take part next time.

The clean-up seemed to pass quite quickly but resulted in over 20 bags of general litter being removed from the streets of Wheatley.

Clean-up Route

Thanks goes to residents Aneta Stevens, Gerda Normington, Jade Rhodes, Sean Bamforth and young George as well as our partners from West Yorkshire Police and Calderdale Council who came along to support the activity.

News of the clean up is quickly gaining praise on social media and it is hoped that more residents continue to come and support in the future.

The bags were left at the entrance of Larch Close Woods Path on Long Lane and will be collected by the Calderdale Council Safer, Cleaner, Greener Team

Nearby Shroggs Park also benefited from the clean-up action. Recently the park has seen an increase in litter, fly-tipping such as mattresses being dumped, dog fouling and overgrown hedges.

Moorside Junior Wardens clean up Beechwood Park

Junior Wardens and Collected LitterThe first national anti-litter campaign took place in 1953, the year of the Queen’s coronation and ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday 21 April, the ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign aims to inspire people to take action and enjoy a few hours together whilst litter picking to improve the state of the communities we live in.

Wednesday 13 April saw 9 Junior Wardens from Moorside Community School get out in the community once again and together with the Calderdale SCG Partnership with the weather on their side they helped clean up Beechwood Park which saw a lot of litter collected.

PCSO's Alice Cordingley and Katie LeemanSince the start of the campaign approximately 800 bags of litter have been collected, with the biggest successes coming from removing overhanging vegetation within terraced housing areas, and removing fly-tipping which approached 17 tonnes and was made up of mattresses, settees and builders’ rubble.

Services involved were Sam Ward and Paul Calvert from the Calderdale Safer Cleaner Greener Team, West Yorkshire Police PCSO’s  Alice Cordingley and Katie Leeman, Community Warden’s Ced Oakley and David Pickard as well as Karen Scanlon and Matthew Scott Thompson from Ovenden Initiative.
