Nearly two-thirds (65%)* of us are worried about our home being broken into, yet there are simple, proven measures we can all take to halve our chances of being burgled.

We have joined forces with our longstanding primary smart security partner, ERA Home Security, to bring you our Think WIDE(N) burglary prevention campaign highlighting the simple, evidence-based WIDE measures which can be taken in any home on a variety of budgets.

At Neighbourhood Watch, we also believe neighbours keeping an eye out for each other is key to reducing burglary, so we’ve extended the WIDE acronym to WIDE(N):

·  W: WINDOWS: Keep your windows locked

·  I: INTERIOR: Put inside lights on a timer/smart bulb

·  D: DOORS: Double or deadlock your doors

·  E: EXTERIOR: Put outside lights on a sensor

·  (N): NEIGHBOURS: Keep an eye out for your neighbours

New and updated West Yorkshire Community Alert

West Yorkshire Police has launched a new and updated version of the messenger system “West Yorkshire Community Alert“.

Community Alert, is a system West Yorkshire Police has been using since 2019, allowing officers across the county to update the public direct with news, updates and appeals on matters that are happening on their doorstep.

This new Community Alert has also been updated to include a range of new benefits, such as the ability for officers to send hyper-localised messages to the public by drawing round a particular area or postcode.

Public registration is free, and people can choose to receive news and appeals, local crime information and/or prevention advice direct via email, text or voice message.

The public can sign up for local updates from their NPT or Neighbourhood Watch contacts, or join a number of specialised community interest groups such as business watch, dog walkers, motorists or crime prevention etc.

Neighbourhood Watch Launches Say No To ASB Campaign

Antisocial behaviour (ASB) incidents have increased over the last three years. Police forces, councils and housing associations are reporting significant spikes in ASB cases – and these are not minor incidents. They are complex and serious cases causing real harm to many people.

45% of people say ASB is a problem where they live, and 56% of those who had either been a victim of or a witness to ASB did not report it to anyone. *

To help tackle the issue, we are running a campaign encouraging people to SAY NO TO ASB.
The campaign will run from the 25th October through to the 21st November on our social channels with key information on recognising, recording, and reporting ASB on our website: ourwatch.org.uk/asb.

We are running a free online ‘SAY NO TO ASB’ webinar on 15th November at 5pm with the charity ASB Help as part of the campaign. Places are limited. To book your place, visit ourwatch.org.uk/webinars.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Launches Police and Crime Plan Consultation – Complete survey by October 17

Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire has today officially launched the consultation to inform her first Police and Crime Plan.

The Mayor is urging everyone in West Yorkshire to get involved and #TellTracy about your policing and community safety priorities.

The consultation will feed directly into the new Plan which sets the strategic direction for West Yorkshire Police, community safety partners and commissioned services over the next three years.

An online survey has been launched along with a host of other options to get involved.

The consultation will run until 19th November with the online survey closing for responses on 17th October. To take part visit https://www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/police-and-crime-plan-consultation or call 0113 348 1740.

Refreshed Police and Crime Plan Launched

I hope you are well and I wanted to share my refreshed Police and Crime Plan with you which I hope you will find informative.

The Plan sets the strategic direction for West Yorkshire Police and our community safety partners.

At the heart of the Plan is our ambition to work together with the police and partners, and with our communities, to help achieve our shared vision of ‘keeping West Yorkshire safe and feeling safe’.

Key additions in this refresh are updated priorities to reflect new approaches, and challenges, to tackling crime in West Yorkshire.

These include:

  • Emphasising the importance of safeguarding work, recognising the challenges and a continued priority of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation.
  • Citing ‘Serious Violence’ as a standalone priority for the first time.
  • Recognising the vital work undertaken by the now established West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit (VRU).
  • And building community resilience to help counter terrorism.
