Free early education places

A child at play

Early education provides your child with the opportunity to develop and learn through well planned play activities in a safe and secure environment. This national initiative is delivered through approved childcare settings.

This scheme allows eligible children to receive free early years education from the term after their second birthday. It is part of a national initiative by the Department for Education (DfE) to improve outcomes for identified two year olds who would benefit from accessing high quality early years and childcare provision. Family support is also available at your local Children’s Centre and this involves sharing information about other services within the community such as Jobcentre Plus and health services that may be of help to you.

Eligibility criteria

From April 2013 children will be eligible if they are Looked After Children or if they meet the Free School Meals criteria.
