Dig It programme for Calderdale gardeners

A series of free outdoor gardening activities are being offered to people living in Calderdale.

The Dig It programme is run by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and aims to help people get more active through gardening.

Based at the Trust’s own plot at the Pellon Allotments the sessions give local people the opportunity to get active outdoors, improve their diet and meet new people.

The sessions on offer include:

  • Gardening for wellbeing – Mondays (morning or afternoon sessions available)
    One off session on allotment growing and provides a free start up home gardening kit
  • Growing healthy – Tuesdays, 1pm to 3pm (every week starting 17 March)
    Topics include growing fruit, vegetables and herbs and you can even take home your own share of the produce
  • Get growing – 4 week course with dates throughout April, May, June and July
    Aimed at beginners and teaches the basics of growing your own fruit and vegetables

Free Walk Leader Training

Calderdale Health Improvement Service will be running a FREE Walk Leader Training course on Tuesday 24 March 2015.

From 9.30am – 4pm at the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, Hopwood Lane, Halifax, HX1 5ER

This course is designed to give participants the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead health walks in their local communities.

Big Cook little cookA fun 4 week healthy eating cooking course for you and your child from Calderdale Health Improvement Service and Sure Start Children’s Centres North and East Halifax.

This course is for parents/carers with children aged 2 ½ – 4 years.

Cooking up a healthy New Year’s resolution

The New Year is a time for resolutions and new starts and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is offering families in Halifax free healthy cooking classes to make 2015 a healthier year.

The Trust’s Calderdale health improvement service is continuing their successful Big Cook, Little Cook programme which offers parents and young children tips on how to cook healthy meals, cooking on a budget and basic kitchen skills.

Courses run for four weeks with each session lasting two hours and are delivered in partnership with Calderdale Council at children’s centres across the area and courses are scheduled to start on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 14 January 2015 at The Outback, Jubilee Children’s Centre – 9.30am to 11.30am
  • Thursday 22 January 2015 at Illingworth Moor Methodist Church – 9.30am to 11.30am
  • Tuesday 24 February 2015 at Lee Mount Baptist Church – 9.30am to 11.30am
  • Wednesday 25 February 2015 at Mixenden Holy Nativity Church – 9.45am to 11.45am
