Calderdale F.H.S – Stories of the Waterhouse Family

David Glover will be giving a talk to the Calderdale Family History Society on Thursday 28 June, 7:30pm-9:30pm at The Shibden Room of North Bridge Leisure Centre, HX3 6TE.

In this fascinating talk, David Glover outlines the many interesting characters of the Waterhouse family. This ranges from the 15th century, to the family owning Well Head Mansion a century ago.

Along the way you will hear about the owners of Shibden Hall:

  • Nathaniel “The Great Benefactor of Halifax”;
  • John the noted 19th century scientist and inventor;
  • and Catherine, the very last of the line. She mysteriously separated from her husband, but endowed several local churches.

Calderdale Family History Society – Yorkshire Oddities

The beautiful Yorkshire countryside is dotted with many interesting and often bizarre follies. These and their fascinating origins are explored in this engaging talk by Paul Kenny, together with some of the “characters” the county has spawned over the centuries.

The talk will take place in the Shibden Room of North Bridge Leisure Centre, HX3 6TE on Thursday 22 February, 7:30pm-9:00pm.

From humble beginnings in Halifax, these include the rather eccentric Percy Shaw, who went on to invent the Catseye reflective road stud.

Admission is just £1 or free to members of Calderdale Family History Society.
