Covid Cases in Calderdale – Message from Debs Harkins

The following is excerpt of the Message from Debs Harkins, Director of Public Health for Calderdale Council

With the summer now upon us and the restrictions feeling like a distant memory for many of us, it can be easy to forget or even ignore the fact that we are still living with COVID-19. However, like the rest of the country we are seeing high rates of the virus and the impacts that accompany it, so it’s important that we remain mindful of the risks and take conscious steps to mitigate them. More than 1 in 20 people in Calderdale currently have COVID, the highest rate in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Unfortunately, this is having a significant impact in hospital admissions and care homes, and the hot weather we are experiencing may increase numbers further.  Although vaccination, previous infection and improved treatment are preventing serious illness for many of us, it’s important that we continue to show kindness and consideration to others who are more vulnerable to the virus and take measures to help protect the business continuity of services that really matter to Calderdale residents. These small things will make a big difference:

  1. If you’ve tested positive or you have symptoms, stay at home if you can and try to stay away from others.
  2. If you’re not up to date with your vaccines, it’s not too late to get vaccinated.  You can easily book online – just search for COVID vaccine.  It’s the best thing we can do to protect ourselves from the virus.
  3. Over 75s and people with a compromised immune system can have an extra booster, often called the spring booster.  It’s really important that those eligible for this extra dose book an appointment – it is still available even though we are now in summer.
  4. Be kind.  Remember that there’s a lot of COVID about and be considerate, especially to people who are older or have a compromised immune system, many of whom have told us that they feel excluded from the opportunities that living with COVID present.

Enjoy the sunshine over the next few days and let’s keep doing our bit to protect ourselves, our communities and our fantastic services.

Public Spaces Protection Orders Renewal – Community Consultation

Working together to keep communities safe and to protect the environment – everyone has a part to play

More information and further Public Consultation Event Dates here

Local people are being asked to have their say on proposed changes to the legal restrictions in place to protect Calderdale’s distinctive moorlands and to keep public spaces safe and clean.

Calderdale Council is reviewing its Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), which can prohibit certain behaviour or activity as well as require action to be taken in a defined area.

Calderdale currently has seven PSPOs which cover the following:

·         The Moorland Fire PSPO was implemented in June 2019 to protect the borough’s moorland and upland areas by preventing the risk of fire.

·         Five of the remaining PSPOs introduced restrictions on a person in charge of a dog/s, for example not entering specific areas such as children’s playgrounds and failing to clean up after their dog.

·         The final order is in respect to the consumption of alcohol in a public place or other designated area. The order allows Police and community safety wardens to require individuals to stop drinking and surrender their alcohol

Cash boost for cultural projects from the Calderdale Cultural Fund

More people will be able to benefit from the joy of Calderdale’s distinctive culture, thanks to the launch of a new Council grant for voluntary organisations to fund cultural projects.

In 2024, Calderdale will celebrate its 50th birthday. As part of this, there will be a Year of Culture in 2024, where organisations and individuals will come together for a major events programme that recognises the importance of culture to the local economy and communities.

In the run up to the Year of Culture, the Council is inviting the local voluntary sector to apply for a share of the Calderdale Cultural Fund 2022 – 2025.

Voluntary organisations can apply for between £5000 and £25,000 a year, for up to three years, to deliver their cultural projects. The deadline for grant applications is Wednesday 23 March 2022.

Cllr Jenny Lynn, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, said:

“Culture plays a huge part in making Calderdale vibrant and distinctive, transforming people’s lives and recovering from the pandemic. We know that every one of our neighbourhoods in Calderdale has stories to tell and talents to showcase. That’s what we want to celebrate in our Year of Culture, and we want everyone to be involved. We want to open up cultural events and activities to all our diverse communities, and this is the aim of our new Calderdale Cultural Fund.”

Cllr Scott Patient, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Resilience, added:

“The Calderdale Cultural Fund recognises the important role of voluntary organisations in enriching people’s lives through culture and the arts. It will also help the sector to get back on its feet after being one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. We want as many organisations as possible to apply for a grant so we can all continue to work together to help build back our cultural sector, towns, tourism and local people’s shared experiences, which are a significant part of Calderdale’s story.”

The aim of the grants is to make culture more accessible to the wider community, to deliver the new Cultural Strategy for Calderdale and to help achieve the Vision2024 for Calderdale, by harnessing the talent of the local cultural sector to build resilience and help people live a larger life.

The Council is looking to support projects that help achieve the cultural objectives from the Cultural Strategy for Calderdale:

  1. A larger creative life

Each and every person has the opportunity for culture and creativity to be woven into the fabric of their lives – whatever their age – to delight and inspire happier, healthier lives.

  1. Creative citizens

Every community is empowered to grow and sustain its own cultural capacity, bringing to life the unique identity of each place and community.

  1. A resilient valley

The cultural sector inspires creative and regenerative actions to build a sustainable future.

  1. Distinctively Calderdale

Businesses and visitors are attracted by the vibrancy of the cultural offer, strong sense of identity and creative possibilities.

  1. A thriving cultural scene

The sector – its people and organisations – is invested in so that it flourishes and plays a unique, dynamic and effective role in wider society.
