Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2016: Community Involvement Award – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

WINNER: Christine Henderson (Halifax Food and Support Drop In)

Christine is one of our local unsung heroes who for the last seven years has volunteered for the Halifax Food and Support Drop In which operates in Park Ward.

She is there every Saturday morning in the kitchen making sure all who come have refreshments are well looked after.

Unseen to many she spends most days collecting food from supermarkets which would otherwise go to waste and she then takes it to the Drop in on Saturdays or to The Gathering Place during the week.

She has a heart full of compassion for those she helps and spends time befriending and supporting many people.

Further information on the Halifax Food and Support Drop In is available online here.

Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2016: Contribution to Sport and Play – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

WINNER: Jamie Johnson

A volunteer at St Augustines for just 7 months,  Jamie has already had a massive impact on things by running Job search and Gardening sessions as well as going above and beyond to start running football sessions off his own back which have been a huge success and a big hit with some service users.

Many of the Centre Users are enthusiastic football fans already and along with Jamie’s help at making them better at the game, they can all get together have a bit of fun every week.

Due to football having a universal appeal that seems to overcome any language and cultural barriers, the sessions provide a way for everyone to enjoy the same activity including Centre users who may not be fluent in English.

Jamie managed to get hold of some kits donated by Calderdale Community Coaching Trust as well as a generous donation from the Missions Group of St Andrew’s Church which helped to purchase suitable footwear.

Jamie really has made an outstanding contribution to St Augustines Centre and to the lives of centre users.

Park & Warley Our Communities Award 2016: Contribution to a Safer Cleaner Greener Environment – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

WINNER: Sylvia Ketley

Sylvia has been a member of the Warley Community Association since it first began in 2008 and she has been involved with everything that the Association has carried out in the past and is always willing to go that extra mile.

One co-worker said

“I have worked alongside Sylvia in creating and maintaining the green areas in the village and I often have to say to her I think we have done enough for today before she will finally give in to go home and relax.”

“Between us we plant up the troughs and planters in and around the village which Sylvia insists she looks after whilst I see to other sites.”

Over the past few years both Sylvia and her husband have suffered some bad health scares but she always bounces back with a smile and cheery disposition to join in all the village Clean-Up days regardless of the weather.

This lady is greatly admired and truly deserves to be recognised for the work she has carried out in the village of Warley.

Everyone goes through difficult times and sometimes our problems affect our day-to-day lives and we feel that we can’t cope. Each year, nearly a quarter of us have difficulties with common psychological problems such as anxiety, low mood, low self-esteem, stress, trauma, phobias, and anger, as well as problems with regards to relationships, work, or debt. If you are in this situation, you are not alone.

Insight Healthcare provides free and confidential NHS talking therapy services across the country. These therapies can help you understand what is happening to you, help you work through your difficult feelings, and develop strategies for coping better. Calderdale’s service is available to anyone who is aged 18 or over and registered with a Calderdale GP.

North Halifax Star 2016: Contribution to Sport and Play – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

WINNER: Ben Robertshaw

The Illingworth Cricket Club Friday Night Project enables young people from the Illingworth area to be able to take part in fun related exercise and give them something positive to do.

This year’s winner is Ben Robertshaw who has supported the project as a volunteer over the last 3 years, leading and managing coaching.

For some of the youngsters taking part it’s just about something fun to do on a Friday night but for others it has led to opportunities to take their abilities to the next level within the junior teams at Illingworth Cricket Club.

Without Ben and the Club’s devotion to ensure that these events are well organised these youngsters might not have the chance to try out cricket.
