Over 20 bags of litter removed from Wheatley Streets

On Saturday 14 September 2019, members of the Wheatley Neighbourhood Watch Group teamed up with partner services to take part in a clean-up in the area organised by Dan Marham, Ward Link Worker from the North Halifax Partnership.

With support from West Yorkshire Police PCSO’s Gordon Thorpe and James Hughes as well as CMBC Community Wardens Jonny Cato and Zameer Akhtar the group met for 1.45pm at The Flying Pig at Greystones.

The groups headed out at 2pm and split in two with one group heading down towards Long Lane and Hebble Lane whilst the other team headed up Wharfdale Mount before going down Ramsden Street and along Wheatley and Shroggs Roads.

The clean up quickly gained the attention of passing residents who were thankful for the work of those involved with most saying they would love to take part in future clean-up activities in the area.

Youngest member of the group George, aged 8 had an ongoing competition to see who could fill their bags the quickest to add an element of fun to the event.

Resident Gerda Norminton who helped with the clean up commended the team effort and said;

“It was great to walk home without looking at rubbish everywhere. A good day and exercise for all of us” and finished by urging more people to take part next time.

The clean-up seemed to pass quite quickly but resulted in over 20 bags of general litter being removed from the streets of Wheatley.

Clean-up Route

Thanks goes to residents Aneta Stevens, Gerda Normington, Jade Rhodes, Sean Bamforth and young George as well as our partners from West Yorkshire Police and Calderdale Council who came along to support the activity.

News of the clean up is quickly gaining praise on social media and it is hoped that more residents continue to come and support in the future.

The bags were left at the entrance of Larch Close Woods Path on Long Lane and will be collected by the Calderdale Council Safer, Cleaner, Greener Team
