BAABUL is the story of a daughter’s hero…
A tribute to a father from his daughter.
A daughter’s appreciation and gratitude to a father who raised his daughters as “a blessing”, this autobiographical performance revisits life events aiming to capture the beauty, love and struggles of a father raising his daughter in a patriarchal society; instilling the belief in her that she can be whatever she wants.
Devised by performer and writer, Sameena Hussain, BAABUL draws on Sameena’s own sense of family and cultural heritage to explore “rukhsati” – the concept of father/daughter relationships in Pakistani culture.
Verd de gris is an arts organisation based in Hebden Bridge, with extensive expertise in delivering arts and community programmes that bring different groups of people together, exploring the differences and celebrating the things we have in common. They work with different generations and with people from different backgrounds and communities.
This piece of work is underpinned by a programme of engagement with young people and people from different communities. A development project, BAABUL is also part of a larger body of work being developed by verd de gris, bringing new, young writers and performers to the fore in Calderdale, with a focus on those who draw on important or topical community issues.
This work is part of Creative Communities, an outreach programme led by Square Chapel in partnership with verd de gris Ltd and Orange Box young people’s centre, using the arts as a tool to bring about changes in people’s lives. Creative Communities is supported with a grant from The National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.
The performance includes a discussion and Q&A session enabling the audience to explore some of the ideas in the piece and to talk to the artist and verd de gris about the development of the work.
The performance is Pay What You Feel, with voluntary contributions accepted at the end.
