WINNER: Shroggs Bowls group
Due to a dwindling membership and a rent price increase the club closed and for the men who depended on this weekly activity, this was more than a blow.
Happily a Staying Well grant was able to bring the green up to a suitable league standard and to pay for 2 years of green fees and purchase new equipment.
However it has been the dedication of the 10 regular volunteers who help to maintain the area, removing litter and rubbish, providing refreshments and keeping the pavilion in Shrogg’s Park clean and tidy.
Over the past 2 years the group has gone from strength to strength.
They now have a total of 26 players in under 50s and over 50 teams. And they’ve seen a few wins! Finishing 1st in the Halifax and Brighouse Veteran’s league, and within the top half of the Elland and Sowerby Bridge evening league.
The group are providing an excellent activity for older people, not only to participate in playing bowls, but to become socially active with others and through making regular use of the bowls green, being active in the park and trying to engage with younger people they are helping to reduce crime in the park.
In their first season the club have had a considerable amount of success, which will hopefully help attract new players and put them in good stead for the forthcoming 2017 season.
