Ash Green pupils meet West Yorkshire Fire Service

Heather Stout from the Mixenden Initiative and pupils from Ash Green Community Primary School, received a visit in school from Blue Watch, from Illingworth Fire Station on Friday 3rd March.

Fire fighters, Barney, Adam, Andy and Fraser, came to meet the lads for the first time, after the boys decided they wanted Blue Watch to be their chosen watch.

It just so happened it was World Book Day in school on the day of their visit, so the boys took Blue Watch by surprise when they were met by Where’s Wally, Batman, The Joker, Al Capone, Iron Man, a footballer, a Ninja Turtle, a pirate and a knight in shining armour!

After asking lots of questions of the fire fighters, Blue Watch invited the boys to visit Illingworth Fire Station on Friday 10th March to have a look around.

The boys were shown around the upstairs of the fire station, where the firemen train and relax whilst waiting to go on a ‘shout’. Watch Commander Andy explained that even if they are asleep, they only have a couple of minutes from getting the call to getting in the fire engine, with all their equipment on, and leaving to attend the call out.

When the group went back downstairs, the boys were shown the room where the fireman’s pole is and where they keep their protective clothing and boots that they wear when attending a fire.

Mrs Bowers and Mr Munday from Ash Green decided to hold a competition to see who could get the firefighters protective clothing on first. They were both very quick but Mr Munday just pipped Mrs Bowers and was the winner!

The group then went outside to the car park where the boys were shown the crashed cars that the fire fighters use to practise having to cut people out of cars. They also showed them some of the equipment they carry on the fire engine. The firemen then got the hoses out and let the boys have a go with them.

The boys really enjoyed the afternoon and ended their visit by thanking Blue Watch for a fantastic tour of Illingworth fire station.
