Prison Me No Way!

Over 60 young people came along to Mixenden Activity Centre and Forest Cottage, Ovenden yesterday to meet Clifton, a serving offender at a prison in Doncaster.

The sessions saw Clifton describe day to day life in prison is like. And guess what? It’s not like what you see on tv!

He also talked about how he believes that the choices he made in his youth for example not to engage in education led to poor decision making and life-changing consequences later on, and how he would do things differently if he had the chance.

The young people had loads of questions to put to the PMNW team including about the food in prison, the effects on his family and how he felt now about the offence he was in prison for and of course, the toilet arrangements! They also answered questions themselves about choices and loyalty to mates.

“Clifton was a sick guy! Really interesting but I was shocked when he said what he was actually in prison for”   Harvey Williams, 15

“I liked that he came out of prison to talk to us, and that he told us what really happens in prison”   Jordan Comer, 16

“It’s ok saying ‘I’m not gonna be a grass’ but it’s made me think about what I’d do differently” Riley Farrar, 15

The Prison Me No Way! sessions were part of the MixMatch and Project_Twelve:31 summer programme running through the holidays in North Halifax.

So far over 70 young people have engaged in extra positive activities this summer, delivered directly by Police, Fire Service and community volunteers including Busoasis, OSCA and Ovenden Phoenix FC.
