Latest update on New Central Library and Archive

New look libraryLocated on the Square Church site next to the Piece Hall, the new library and archive will occupy land that has been unused for many years and will blend the remains of the church into an iconic external design and internal layout.

The new library will feature a range of facilities including:

Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction
Adult fiction including crime, sci-fi, romance and horror can be found on the 1st floor with non-fiction including one new feature such as Fine Art collection, presenting a wealth of art, architecture, textiles and photography titles located on the 2nd floor.

An IT Area
The new library will have a fast, easy wifi service throughout the building, which doesn’t need any membership to access. Pcs are dotted throughout all four floors, but the main bank of PCs are in the top-floor IT Area

Media Store
This exciting room on the 1st floor will bring lots of new features to the Central Library with rentable DVDs and CDs, a bookable iMAC, a range of touch-screen devices and much more.

About 30,000 locally handmade bricks will make up the walls of the new building and every single brick has been drawn by hand in the plans, and sample walls have been built to make sure the bricks are exactly the right style, shape and colour to blend with the Grade I listed Piece Hall and the town’s many historical buildings.

You can keep an eye on progress with regular drone shots of the site which show how much the site is changing and developing. Photographs and film of the progress are being taken at regular intervals which can be seen on Twitter and Facebook as well as the films being uploaded onto YouTube.
